The Skipped Song.

On this (super) dreary morning on the east coast I decided to grab a couple of cd's; one for my drive to and one for my drive from. Disc (a) was Jimmy Eat World's "Bleed American," which is always a solid choice (under any circumstance). Disc (b) was Nirvana's "In Utero," (again, solid choice). I pulled out of my parking spot, popped in Jimmy Eats, and away I went. A few minutes into the drive and it happened, just like that, without even thinking: I skipped their song "The Middle." I can't stand that song. At all. Like, at all at all. Maybe I just heard it way too many times when I was in middle school and high school that it eventually just wore me down. I love the album, but the song belongs nowhere near my ears. So as I skipped track 3 (wish I kept track of such of thing, I wonder how many skips I'd be up to...) I started wondering about other songs on good albums I skip.

Here's a small list (in no particular order, mind you):

1. Smells Like Teen Spirit, Nevermind- Nirvana
- OBviously a game changer (duh), but it's not even the best song on the album (Drain You and Lounge Act are front runners for me) let alone their best song ever. Love the album, but I generally skip track 1.

2. Can't Stop, By The Way- Red Hot Chili Peppers
- Too simple for the album, in my opinion. Love RHCP (not including I'm With You, which I'm still not in like with...) but I prefer the other dynamic/soulful tracks on BTW than this one.

3. Rock 'N Roll, Led Zeppelin IV- Led Zeppelin
- As much as I love Stairway to Heaven, it doesn't get any better than Going to California. That song speaks to my soul in a way that Rock 'N Roll can't. Maybe I've just seen it in way too many car commercials?

4. Your Body Is A Wonderland, Room For Squares- John Mayer
- Hate this damn song.  Well... I strongly dislike this song, and (maybe, just maybe) because the song is for and about the woman 16 year old me was destined to end up with: Jennifer Love Hewitt*. Room For Squares is a phenomenal album, especially for a debut album. And while YBISW fits with the vibe Mayer has going on the album, it's a mediocre song compared to the others. FYI, Why Georgia Why and St. Patrick's Day are my favorites on the album.

OK. I guess I can only think about 4 examples right now (which is upsetting, because as soon as I click send a hundred more songs will pop into my head). But you get the idea. Most of the time I don't listen to the radio because I can't stand what stations play. And most of the time the songs on the radio aren't even the best songs on a particular record.

Anyway, that's all for today.

*Jennifer Love Hewitt and I never got together. Can't Hardly Wait is and will always be a classic in my heart.

Shed.

Shed next door to my parents.

Coming or Going?

Cemetery Photos.

I took these in February while visiting Gettysburg. Taken with my Olympus OM-1, 35mm.
